Pfluger to receive YWCA Tribute to Women Honor

WYCA Website

Ewing, NJ …Sharon Pfluger '82, head coach of the field hockey and lacrosse programs at The College of New Jersey, has been selected as a 2016 Tribute to Women honoree by the YWCA Princeton.

Pfluger will be honored at the 33rd Annual Tribute to Women Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 5:15 - 8:45 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency – Princeton. This is the premier event of its kind in central New Jersey and recognizes women of excellence who live or work in the greater Princeton area, and who have made significant contributions in their professions and communities.

A graduate of the college in 1982, Pfluger recently registered her 1,000th career combined victory this past fall, becoming the first collegiate coach in NCAA history to reach 1,000 wins by leading two programs. She currently owns a career coaching record of 1,012-152-10 (.864) and has led the Lions lacrosse program to 11 NCAA national championships and the field hockey program to nine NCAA national titles. The most recent national championship came in the fall of 2014.

An iconic figure in women's collegiate athletics, Pfluger was elected into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003. In November of 2007, the US Lacrosse Board of Directors acknowledged her outstanding contributions to the game of lacrosse with her selection for the 50th class of the United National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Success began for Pfluger as a player herself at Trenton State College (now TCNJ). She was a member of the Lions' field hockey team that won the first NCAA national championship in program history in 1981. She also earned All-American honors in lacrosse during her playing career.

TCNJ will be well represented at the banquet in March. Lisa Breza '84, senior vice president and chief nursing officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, and Stacey Geurds '91, assistant prosecutor with the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, are also being honored. The college has a strong history of leaders who have been selected as Tribute to Women honorees. TCNJ President R. Barbara Gitenstein received the honor in 2003, and current Board of Trustee member Ms. Eleanor V. Horne was selected in 1996.

The YWCA Princeton has been serving the needs and interests of women and families in the Greater Princeton community since 1922. This event raises crucial funds to allow the organization to continue offering services including English as a Second Language classes, breast cancer support, and year-round and after-school child care, to those in need.
