TCNJ announces new workshops for international professionals

TCNJ’s Center for American Language & Culture has launched professional development programs to help international professionals overcome language challenges in the workplace and succeed in their careers.

The first workshop, “Confidence in Oral Communications,” which is co-sponsored by TCNJ and the Small Business Development Center, will take place on campus on September 26October 3, and October 10 from 6– 7:30 p.m.

This workshop is tailored to current or aspiring business leaders and managers who lack confidence in communicating verbally; team-oriented professionals who are seeking to hone their presentation skills; and professionals who wish to focus on specific accent challenges.

“Today, New Jersey business professionals were born and raised all over the world with countless home languages other than English,” said Christa Olson, TCNJ’s Senior International Officer and Executive Director of Global Engagement. “This diversity is a strength of our state but may also mean communication problems arise. This workshop can help participants overcome those language challenges and succeed in their careers.”

The first class will focus on individualized goal setting, scenario development, and field vocabulary development, including identifying gaps and needs.

The second class will deal with client conversations, smaller meetings, developing a useful bank of conversational moves to make progress in relationships, and accent reduction.

The final evening will cover presentational speech techniques and accent reduction.

Guiding the instruction will be TCNJ’s Center for American Language & Culture academic staff, Monica F. Jacobe and Amy L. Moyer.

Sponsored by America’s Small Business Development Center – New Jersey at The College of New Jersey (SBDC-NJ at TCNJ), a government funded resource that provides management and technical assistance to established small businesses and start-ups throughout greater Mercer County, New Jersey. SBDC-NJ at TCNJ is supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the State of New Jersey, The College of New Jersey and Mercer County Office of Economic Development and Sustainability.

The cost is $300 per participant. For more information and to register please visit http://esl.tcnj.edu/confidence-in-oral-communications/.
