TCNJ sponsors meeting of minds on Rawls’ “A Theory of Justice”

EWING, NJ … Forty years later, John Rawls’ innovative theory of social justice is still inspiring big conversations.

On Saturday, Oct. 23, a diverse group of academic experts, business and community leaders, a former politician and a state Supreme Court justice will convene at The College of New Jersey to discuss the philosopher’s magnum opus, “A Theory of Justice.”  The book, which adapted the “social contract” tradition of Locke and Kant, is regarded as one of the most important texts in political philosophy.

Principle speakers will be Professor Samuel Freeman of the University of Pennsylvania, Professor Erin Kelly of Tufts University, and Professor Thomas Pogge of Yale University.

Afterward, a symposium panel of Delaware Valley speakers, including Associate Justice Helen E. Hoens of the New Jersey Supreme Court and former gubernatorial candidate Douglas Forrester, will open a dialogue on Rawls’ theory.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. in the Mildred and Ernest E. Mayo Concert Hall in TCNJ’s Music Building. It is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Morton Winston at mwinston@tcnj.edu or 609-771-2398.

“John Rawls’ A Theory of Justice: Forty Years On” is sponsored by the Greater Philadelphia Philosophy Consortium, TCNJ Department of Philosophy and Religion, TCNJ School of Culture and Society, TCNJ Alan Dawley Center for the Study of Social Justice.
