National Geographic Explorer to lecture at TCNJ

National Geographic Explorer to lecture at TCNJEWING, NJ … Dr. Wade Davis of National Geographic will visit The College of New Jersey on Monday, March 28, 2011 to speak about preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous communities around the world.

The lecture and Q&A will take place from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Mildred & Ernest E. Mayo Concert Hall, followed by a book signing.

Davis is a National Geographic Explorer in Residence whose work aims to shine a light on indigenous people whose ways are vanishing at a rapid pace. As an anthropologist, ethnobotanist, photographer, and filmmaker, Davis has lived through the years among and studied countless native peoples and recorded for the rest of us their customs, beliefs, unique talents, and dying ways. Today, he is considered one of the loudest voices in the race for preserving cultural heritage. He holds degrees in anthropology and biology and received his Ph.D. in ethnobotany, all from Harvard University.

His first book, The Serpent and the Rainbow—A Harvard Scientist’s Astonishing Journey into the Secret Societies of Haitian Voodoo, Zombis, and Magic, recounts his extraordinary experiences researching the potion/poison used in Haiti to create “zombis.”

The event is presented by the TCNJ Multicultural Lecture Series Committee.
