The Signal wins big in New Jersey Press Association contest

EWING, NJ … The Signal, The College of New Jersey’s student newspaper, won seven awards in the collegiate newspaper contest sponsored by the New Jersey Press Association, including a second-place finish in the top category of general excellence.

“These students spend a lot of time every week putting out a great product, and they really strive for excellence,” said Emilie Lounsberry, faculty advisor to The Signal.

Twelve college newspapers submitted entries in 14 categories that were judged by active or former editors, writers, and photographers from newspapers that are members of New Jersey Press Association.

The Signal received the following awards:

News Writing – first place: Emily Brill (sophomore, journalism/professional writing), Jeff Roman (senior, journalism/professional writing) and Jamie Primeau (sophomore, journalism/professional writing & English)

Deadline reporting – second place: Bobby Olivier (senior, journalism/professional writing) and Matt Huston (junior, journalism/professional writing)

Personality Profile – second place: Jamie Primeau and Todd Petty (senior, journalism/professional writing & English)

Editorial Writing – first place: Caroline Russomanno (junior, journalism/professional writing & English), Katie Brenzel (junior, journalism/professional writing & English) and Matt Huston

Column/Opinion Writing – second place: Bobby Olivier, Brandon Gould (sophomore, journalism/professional writing) and Katie Brenzel

Arts and Entertainment – first place: Caroline Russomanno, Emily Brill, Katie Brenzel

General Excellence – second place: The Signal staff.
