Like so many seasons in the storied history of TCNJ athletics, this fall has the potential to be special. Four teams will defend their New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship titles with hopes of advancing to the NCAA championship tournaments.
And when it comes to national titles, no fall program is more familiar with hoisting trophies than Lions field hockey. “We’re going to treat every game likes it’s the most important game of the season,” said senior forward Erin Healy, a freshman on the 2011 NCAA championship team. “This team has a lot of potential. It’s our job to turn that potential into reality and go as far as we can—which is to win it all.”
Women’s soccer hopes to make the program’s 24th consecutive NCAA tourney appearance later this fall. To do so, the Lions must overcome a tough regular season schedule. One major test will come on Saturday, October 4, when Montclair State visits Lions Stadium at 7 p.m. The Lions defeated the Red Hawks in a shootout in last fall’s NJAC title match.
The football team will host the Division III defending champion for the first time in program history, when top-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater visits Lions Stadium on Saturday, September 20. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
Women’s tennis enters the season looking to extend one of college sports’ most incredible streaks. The program has won 31 consecutive conference titles and is a perfect 154-0 in NJAC matches.
Both the men’s and women’s cross country squads will defend their conference championships. The men are seeking their 21st straight title while the women look to return to the NCAA championships.
The men’s soccer team opened its season against the defending national champion Messiah College last week. They play four teams ranked in the top 15 this fall as they pursue the program’s first NCAA tournament berth since 2005.
So join the excitement this fall with TCNJ athletics. And wear your blue shirt with an air of confidence this Friday night.
