Bioethicist James Stacey Taylor in the NY Times: With Poem, Broaching the Topic of Death

Philosophy professor James Stacey Taylor, who has written about Navajo views of end-of-life care, was quoted in a New York Times article about new approaches for broaching this difficult topic. “Navajos value the principle of autonomy or self-determination. But their cultural taboos — you can’t think negatively, or it will happen — restrict their ability to autonomously plan for their end-of-life care, since the planning itself requires such negative thinking,” Taylor said. “Using the poem and open-ended questions allows nuanced and respectful solutions to this problem because it gives people the opportunity to discuss end-of-life planning impersonally.”

Civil War historian Daniel Crofts on the NY Times Opinionator blog: No Better Southern Man

Daniel Crofts, a professor of American history, writes for the New York Times blog, ‘Disunion,’ about the “Southern Opposition” – Union loyalists – on the eve of the Civil War. About two dozen members of the House of Representatives, all of them former Whigs and almost all from the Upper South, they used their influence during the first few months of 1861 to keep the Upper South from seceding – a fact, Crofts says, that explodes any notion of the white South as a unified region hellbent on leaving the Union.
